In short: Business Intelligence answers the question your other tools do not: is your website actually working for your business? It reads your traffic and search data and explains, in plain English, what is going well and what to do next.
What it is
Your monitoring tools tell you whether your site is up, secure and fast. Business Intelligence answers a different question: is your site actually working for your business?
It pulls together the numbers that usually live in four or five separate dashboards, your traffic, your search performance, your real-world page experience and your visibility in AI answer engines, and turns them into one clear picture. Instead of leaving you to interpret charts, Maintena's AI reads the data for you and explains what it means in plain English, then points to where your attention will pay off most.
Think of it as the "so what?" layer on top of your analytics. Not "you had 4,200 sessions this month", but "traffic is up 18% on last month, most of the growth is organic search, and three pages are close to page one and worth a small push".
What it connects
Business Intelligence reads from trusted, first-party data sources. You connect them once (see What you need to do) and Maintena keeps them in sync.
| Source | What you learn |
|---|---|
| Google Analytics 4 | How many people visit, where they come from, what they do on the site, and which pages and channels drive your conversions and revenue. Includes a dedicated "AI Assistant" channel so you can see traffic arriving from AI tools. |
| Google Search Console | Which search terms and pages bring you traffic from Google, your average position, click-through rate and impressions, plus any pages Google cannot index or that are returning errors. |
| Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) | Real-world page experience measured from actual Chrome visitors: loading speed, responsiveness and visual stability. This is what real people experienced, not a lab test. |
| AI engine ranking (Beta) | Whether AI answer engines surface and cite your site for the questions your customers are asking. See Good to know for how to read this one. |
Everything above is live today. A few further sources are planned, see On the roadmap.
How it works
You do not have to build reports or piece anything together. The flow is simple:
- Data comes in on a schedule. Once your Google properties are connected, Maintena pulls fresh figures automatically each day and keeps a rolling history so you can see trends, not just today's snapshot.
- Maintena's AI reads it. Claude turns the raw numbers into short, plain-English insights: what changed, why it might matter, and what to do about it. It never invents numbers; it only interprets the real data.
- You see the headline and the detail. A fleet overview ranks all of your sites by traffic and conversions. Open any single site for the full breakdown across tabs:
- Traffic and conversions: sessions, users, engagement, conversions, revenue, your top landing pages and a breakdown of traffic by channel.
- Search performance: your top-ranking queries and pages, click-through rate, average position, an "opportunities" view of terms that are close to page one, and any index or error issues to fix.
- Real-user experience: how your pages actually perform for visitors, with a link through to the Speed Monitor for the full breakdown.
- AI engine ranking (Beta): whether AI answers are citing you, tracked over time.
Each site carries a simple verdict at the top, Growing, Flat or Declining, based on how this month compares with last. If you want the very latest figures on demand, use Recheck now and Maintena will refresh that site straight away.
What you need to do
Business Intelligence reads your data through secure, read-only access. Maintena never sees or stores your Google password, and you can remove our access at any time. Connecting takes a few minutes per site.
- Get the Maintena service account email. This is a single, fixed address, not something you type yourself. Maintena provides it during onboarding, or you can request it any time by contacting support. It is not yet shown on the connection page itself, so keep it handy once you have it.
- Give it read-only access to your Google Analytics 4 property. Go to Google Analytics → Admin → Property Access Management, then add the Maintena service account email as a Viewer. Viewer is read-only; it cannot change anything in your account.
- Add the same email in Google Search Console. Go to Google Search Console → Settings → Users and permissions, and add the same address. Your site needs to already be a verified property in Search Console for this to work.
- Enter your property details in Maintena. In your dashboard, go to Business Intelligence → BI Overview, open the site, and click Settings. Paste in your GA4 property's numeric Property ID (found in GA4 under Admin → Property Settings — this is not the same as the
G-XXXXXXXMeasurement ID) and your Search Console verified property URL. Save, and your first sync starts automatically. - That's it for page experience. Real-user experience data (CrUX) needs no setup on your side. As long as your site gets enough Chrome visitors, it appears automatically. Very low-traffic pages may simply show no field data yet.
If you are on a managed plan, your Success Manager can do all of this with you, or on your behalf once you have granted access — including finding the right property if a site has more than one.
On the roadmap
The following are planned and not available yet. We will let you know as each one ships. Nothing in this list is live today.
- Local Presence (Google Business Profile). For businesses that win customers through phone calls and footfall, this will surface calls, direction requests, website clicks and reviews as first-class results, so your "conversions" reflect real local demand, not just form fills.
- Ad ROI. Connect your ad spend, starting with Meta, to see your return on ad spend next to the value your site is generating, all in one view.
- Deeper keyword intelligence. Optional enrichment that adds search volume and competition difficulty to your keywords, so you can prioritise the terms worth chasing.
- Domain authority badge. A lightweight, at-a-glance SEO-health score for each site.
Good to know
- Recent days are provisional. Analytics providers revise the most recent day or two after the fact, so today's and yesterday's numbers can move slightly before they settle, usually within about 48 hours. Maintena re-checks the trailing days automatically, so a small shift in very recent figures is expected, not a bug.
- Your timezone and currency are respected. Monthly comparisons are calculated in your Analytics property's own timezone, and money is shown in your property's own currency, so the figures line up with what you see in Google.
- AI traffic is often under-counted. A large share of visits that originate from AI tools arrive without a referrer and show up as "Direct" traffic. The AI Assistant channel is a useful signal, but treat it as a floor, not the full picture.
- AI Engine Ranking is an experimental Beta. It measures whether an AI web search surfaces and cites your site, as a practical proxy for AI visibility. There is no official, cross-engine "who cited me" feed from the AI providers, so we measure it ourselves and label it plainly. Scores are shown as a rolling multi-week average because week-to-week readings are noisy; a brand-new site needs roughly two months of data before its reading is reliable. Depending on your plan, this check may run monthly, fortnightly or weekly.
- You stay in control of access. Access is read-only and granted by you. You can revoke Maintena's Viewer access in Google at any time, and the feature simply stops updating for that site.
